Facts and Lore: Labradorite falls into the feldspar mineral category. It is feldspar with albite being the composition (Ca,Na)[Al(Al,Si)Si2O8]. Due to the unique nature of the reason for labradorite's iridescence, it actually has its own name- labradorescence. This is a type of Schiller effect. This means that the reason for the refractive coloring is due to a reflection from BETWEEN the layers.
The name for this mineral comes from a discovery of the stone near Labrador, Canada in 1770. Since then it has been documented in Finland (the home of spectrolite), Madagascar, Mexico, Norway, Russia, United States, and Australia. I have had the privileged of living in Alaska a few years ago and while not living in a village, being exposed to some of the history and traditional peoples. The story of the Inuit people and Labradorite is simple yet elegant. Their tribal legends explain how the Northern Lights became trapped in the stone and produced Labradorite.
There are different names for different colors and grades of labradorite that are not recognized by the science fields. When there is a high degree of labradorescence, the mineral is then referred to as Spectrolite. Rainbow moonstone from Madagascar is sometimes actually a white labradorite. I have also seen labradorite sold in the metaphysical world as blue pearl moonstone, black moonstone, and larvikite.
Labradorite can be enhanced with copper that alters their coloring dramatically.
