Facts and Lore: The formula for pyrite is FeS2. It is a mineral that is always a metallic yellow/brass color. The name comes from Greek meaning fire. Known to many as iron pyrite and Fool's Gold, this stone tripped up many a miner and gold panner during the early American gold rush as it was mistaken by them to be real gold. Pyrite was used during the 16th and 17th centuries- a lump of pyrite was placed in a gun to provide a struck spark for ignition. Pyrite is currently being used in one popular brand of lithium battery. Rumors have put it forth as a possible material for future use in solar panels. It has been known to tarnish or even break down in some manners of formation, but is generally a very stable mineral. The longest side is the measurement that they are sorted by. They could be very thin in both thickness and width making the measurement in length only. All pictures are from the current lot so it will hopefully give you an idea of the dimensional comparisons for your piece. These are tiny - TINY - babies!!! Small means the largest side measures less than ½ inch. Imagine smaller than the fingernail on your pinkie finger. Smaller Mediums are just over ½ inch on the longest side. Again, these are most often just bigger than the fingernail on your pinkie! Medium means the largest side measures less than 1 inch but can be as small as ½ inch. Large means the largest side measures less than 1 ½ inch but the piece can be just a smidge over 1 inch. XLarge means the largest side measures over 1 ½ inch.
